August 8th was our first day of home school high school! We committed this school year to God and Psalm 37:5 is our motto, “Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.” As we began to unpack and start to make a schedule, I realized that God has been preparing me for “such a time as this” for a long time. I went to a non-traditional Christian school. Grades 7-12 at my high school used the ACE curriculum, which is used as a home school curriculum. I did not realize this until home school became a reality for us. I feel very comfortable with the day-to-day plan, because this is exactly how I was taught in high school. Each week, Landon and Lane plan their schedule (with supervision) and then it is up to them how and when they reach those “goals”. It gives them freedom to work really hard one day and maybe take it easy on another day. Just as long as all that day’s work is completed, I am ok with it. It has been different for them, since all they have known is public school, but they are adapting very well.
Here are some of their thoughts:
What are some of the pros and cons of home school?
Landon: I can take breaks whenever I want, wear comfortable clothes and the lunch lady is goodJ I cannot see my friends, no fun electives and there is a lot of reading.
(They are taking typing and Bible as electives)
Lane: I like home school because it takes less time and I can wear my pajamas. There is a lot of boring reading, and I can’t talk to my friends L
What do you miss the most from public school?
Both: Friends and band
Which subject do you like the best so far?
Landon: Spanish
Lane: History
Do you like your teacher (trick question)?
Landon: She is good and she tries to be as fair as possible. She likes to hear what I think and I can talk to her about anything whenever I want.
Lane: She’s alright. Unlike a lot of teachers, she cares what I think and listens to me.
Where would you like to go for field trips?
Landon: Nelspruit, Johannesburg, camping and Kruger National Park.
Lane: Madagascar
Describe the last field trip? (They are studying Biology)
Landon: We went to Hlane National Park in Swaziland. It is about one hour away from where we are living. We saw a lot of animals including elephants, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, zebras, a leopard, wildebeests and lots of impala.
Lane: We went on a game drive and saw a lot of animals. I finally saw a GIRAFFE!
The first couple of weeks were challenging since we were still living in the three- bedroom apartment. The many distractions of living so close together became an issue at times. We moved into a house this week and now the boys have their own “school room”. They enjoyed picking out the desks and maps. For now, they are using our camping chairs, since these are the only chairs we have in the whole house. It will eventually all come together.
Thank you for following our journey in Swaziland. Thank you to all who support us financially and in prayer. As we continue to adjust, we know that we are where God has called us to be. His timing is perfect. All He asks is that we commit our ways unto Him and He will handle the rest! Our prayer is that each of you feel the same peace we have experienced by following His path.
